9-Day Long Durga Navratri Starts Today; Devotees Throng City Temples to Offer Prayers

navratriNew Delhi, Thursday, September 25 – Finally the season of festivals kicked off today with 9-day long Durga Navratri, a period when most of the devotees offer prayers to the powerful Hindu deity and observe fast as well. Marking the onset of the Navratri, the festival is enthusiastically celebrated across the nation by people of different age groups. All nine roops of Maa Durga namely Shailputri,  Brahmacharani, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandmata, Kaatyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhiratri are prayed with immense devotion.

Since devotees believe her as the goddess of power against evil forces, they throng the city temples on Thursday. Right from early morning today, they waited in long queues outside the temples of various regions just to get a glimpse of the ‘supreme being’ and pay their obeisance to her. In order to steer clear of stampedes and other crimes in the temple premises, all arrangements were done properly. Best part was to see a separate queue for men and women devotees, lending a hand to them to move forward swiftly.

On Thursday, prayers were offered to Shailputri. The process of worshiping with full customs will carry on till Oct 3. Up to that period, most of Delhi and NCR streets will remain lightened up by different sizes of bulbs. In view of the fact that people feel a unique sense of comfort within their heart thanks to dedicated prayers, the festival is celebrated with extreme enthusiasm.

On Wednesday, city markets drew attention of massive crowd. Customers purchased coconut, red chunari, Ganga jal, moli,mango leaves, sandalwood, earthen pots, vermilion, flower garland and ghee in the required quantity, to start the festival in a complete traditional ways. Demand for several fruits like banana and apple and veggies like tomato and potato – along with coriander leaves, lemon and green chillies – soared and that was clearly visible with their inflated rates.

Given that a number of people visit Mansa Devi, Vaishno Devi and Vindhyavasini Dham during this auspicious event, security arrangements are made tight at these places as well to avoid any sort of mishap. Popular restaurateurs and eating joints are all set to fetch attention of the fasters through Navratra Special Thali. Mouth-watering fasting menu is all set to impress them with unique flavors and presentation. On the whole, festival fever has completely gripped the nation and is likely to last almost for a month as Diwali, Dussehra and Dhanteras are just here to knock at the doors.
